      Private THOMAS ATHERTON was in the 14th Company of the Machine gun Corps in the 10th Suffolk Regiment.
      His Regiment number was 3553 formerly 18061.
      He enlisted in Haverhill on February 1916
      He started life working on a farm with his family before later joining the Newmarket Post office .
      A plaque is still on the wall in Newmarket Post office in remembrance of Thomas and two other Post Office workers who lost their lives in the Great War.
      He was killed on the last day of the Battle of the Somme in the area of the Quadrilateral (Between Serre and Beaumont Hamel) aged 20 .
      Thomas was subsequently awarded the British and Victory medals.
      On Saturday the 19th November 2016 , a Memorial service was held as St Peters Church , Little Thurlow in honour of Thomas as this was 100 years to the day since he was killed in action.
