  • Notes
    • In an age when most people were illiterate, the Registrar probably wrote it down as he had thought he heard it pronounced - therefore, the Sarah who was Jonathan's wife was baptisted a Sarah Firebrace in Aldgate (which is about half a mile from St Peter's upon Cornhill where the actual marriage took place) London 15th October 1644, daughter of John Firebrace a vintner (wine merchant) and his wife Sarah. John Firebrace was himself a 'Gentleman' being the 4th son of a Robert Firebrace of Derby and his wife Susanna Jerome.

    • Now Sarah's family were not of note in England until her uncle Henry Firebrace was knighted by King Charles ll in 1685, who he was in service to, (having previously being in service to his Father Charles 1). See Link below for Wikipedia site info on him.

From this link, I found a book had been written about the life of Sir Henry Firebrace 1619-1691 called 'Honest Harry' by a descendant (Author Cordell William Firebrace-Publisher Murray 1932 -392 pages)

Below is an extract from the book 'Honest Harry' Page 10, which is referring to Sarah's Father John Firebrace who died in Aldgate in 1650 and his son John Firebrace who went to sea as a purser.
John Firebrace Vintner of St. Botolph without Aldgate, died in 1650. His son John went to sea as a purser in the 'Merchant Adventure 'of which his brother-in-law, Jonathan Atherton was commander, trading to the West Indies. He settled in Barbados, where his descendants prospered as merchants and planters.
I have also found a link to the Will of Sarah's brother who died in Barbados in 1693 the interesting extract being: -
My Mother Sarah F and my sister Sarah Atherton and her two daughters each a ring of 20s.
