      (Probate issued 18 Apr 1827)

The 18th day of April 1827
James Atherton one of the Executors in this Will named was sworn in common form - Power being reserved to William Pass the other Executor therein also named to take upon him the execution of the said Will when he shall ---(?) fully request the same and he further made oath that the personal estate of effects of the Testator within the Diocese of Chester were under the value of four hundred and fifty pounds before one Oswald (?) Leicester Surrogate.

The Testator died the 12th day of October 1826.Parentage of John Atherton

For some time, I have been concerned about the parentage of John Atherton who married Ann(e) Backhouse in Bowden on 18 Oct 1878. I, alongside another couple of `intrepid` genealogists have even compared signatures from Wills and Marriage Records to determine the `correct` John.
Now it would appear that the correct John has been identified purely by accident! Allan Bond, one of the aforementioned (Gwenda Jones being the other) genealogists whilst researching a branch of his own family James Atherton - the step brother of John Atherton - discovered a marriage link in Bowden that linked the families. In brief:

Peter Bradburn had a sister called Hannah who married a John Drinkwater in Davenham Cheshire 25 Jan 1762, which made them Uncle ( by marriage) and Aunt to Ann Bradburn wife of James Atherton.

John Drinkwater and his wife Hannah were also uncle and Aunt to William Drinkwater (son of John`s brother Ralph) who married Elizabeth Backhouse in Bowdon in 1792, sister of Ann Backhouse wife of John Atherton of Altrincham.

As Allan says, this is to much of a coincidence not to be seen in any other light as a family connection between both John Atherton of Altrincham & James Atherton of Witton.

      Case closed.
