      Dated 28th January 1773

      In the name of God Amen I William Atherton of Bold in the County of Lancaster, Yeoman, being in good health and of sound and perfect understanding and memory (thanks be to Almighty God for the same) but considering the uncertainty of this mortal life do make and ordain this to be my last Will and Testament in manner and form following (that is to say).

      First and principally I resign my Soul to Almighty God my creator, hoping for a joyful resurrection at the last day through the merits of Christ Jesus my blessed redeemer, and my body I commit to the ground to be decently buried at the discretion of my herein after mentioned Executors.

      And as to the worldly substance where with it hath pleased Almighty God to bless me with, it is my will that it be disposed of in the following manner. I would have all my just debts, funeral expenses together with the charge of proving this my last Will and Testament be first paid and discharged out of my personal estate and effects.

      Then next I give and bequeath unto my welbeloved wife Hannah Atherton all my estate in Bold where we now live called Derbyshire with all the rights, profits, privileges and appurtenances there unto belonging together with the sum of six pounds a year of lawful money of great Britain during her natural life, to be paid her at two equal half yearly payments, the said yearly annuity of six pounds to be paid out of my personal estate and effects either from the interest rising there from, or otherwise as shall appear more meet? and convenient to my herein after named executors. And also that she shall have as many goods as shall be sufficient to furnish her one room for her use the said goods to be at her own choice, but if it happen that she marry again I would have the said annuity of six pounds a year to cease and be no longer paid and also the above mentioned goods took from her and sold towards paying the herein after mentioned legacies.

      Also I give and bequeath unto my Grandson Thomas Atherton now beyond sea the sum of five pounds of lawful money of Great Britain.

      Also I give and bequeath unto my Grandson James Atherton the sum of twenty pounds of ye like lawful money of Gt Britain.

      Also I give and bequeath unto my Grandson William Atherton the sum of twenty pounds of the like lawful money of Great Britain.

      Also I give and bequeath unto my Granddaughter Ellen Atherton the sum of five pounds of the like lawful money of Great Britain which said legacies I would have paid within six months after my wife's decease, but if it happen that my Grandson Thomas be not then in England or if it happen that any other of the above legatees be dead then their respective shares I would have to go to my Grandson Richard Atherton.

      Also I give and bequeath unto my herein after named executors the sum of thirty pounds of lawful money of Great Britain in trust nevertheless for the use of my three grandchildren John Atherton, Peter Atherton and Sarah Atherton towards bringing them up till they are all able and qualified to get their own maintenance and till the youngest of them arrive to the age of twenty one years, and if any of the money shall then remain unexpended to be divided amongst them equally share and share alike.
      Also I give and bequeath unto my friend Robert Traverse of Burtonwood the sum of twenty shillings of lawful money of Great Britain.

      And lastly all the rest, residue and remainder of my personal estate and effects whatsoever whether money or money worth after paying the above mentioned legacies I give and bequeath unto my Grandson Richard Atherton together with all my wearing apparel which I am possessed of at the time of my decease.

      And lastly I nominate and appoint my well beloved wife Hannah Atherton, my Grandson Richard Atherton and my friend Robert Traverse of Burtonwood Schoolmaster executors and executrix of this my last Will and Testament trusting in their fidelity in the due execution here of as my trust is in them reproved.
      In witness whereof I have here unto set my hand and seal this twenty eight day of January one thousand seven hundred and seventy three.

      Wills and Testaments in the mark
